Five pledges on Probity that mean business
The expenses scandal has been incredibly damaging to the institution of Parliament and almost inevitably has brought suspicion on all those who belong to political parties and who seek to serve the public and represent their constituents in Parliament. As a measure of my intention to build solid foundations of trust with the electorate ahead of the general election whenever it comes as Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Easington I would like to put on record the following five pledges which will guide my conduct.
I have no doubt that a great number of our current Members of Parliament already embody these principles in their day-to-day conduct and their example should be recognised. The public however quite rightly see widespread abuses and lack of accountability within the system previously in place as unacceptable. I would however not support a return to a system where only those who are independently wealthy can afford to put themselves forward for election to Parliament. Realistic reforms to the system of MPs’ expenses and allowances must be brought forward and should ensure the legitimate requirements of those representing constituencies outside Greater London can be met, allowing claims for appropriate and reasonable accommodation and travel expenses. In the absence, however, of a decision on the final form of the new system, these five pledges will act as my guiding principles if with the confidence and support of the electorate I am elected to the House of Commons.
- As a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate I will subscribe to high standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and financial economy;
- I seek elected office not for personal gain but to serve the public and our democracy, which I consider to be an honour and a privilege;
- I will publish my expenses online within a month of submitting them and make them available annually in full to constituents;
- I will hold regular meetings within my constituency and will regularly report back to my constituency party;
- I will apply the principle of best value to all decisions I make which involve the use of public money in connection with my duties, to include travel and accommodation.
