Labour Party
Easington Constituency Labour Party has a long and proud tradition, going back to the very foundation of the Labour Party over a hundred years ago.
Amongst the former Members of Parliament representing this constituency was Sidney Webb who, along with his wife Beatrice, was one of the founders of the Fabian Society and the architect of the constitution of the Labour Party. Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour Prime Minister, and Manny Shinwell, the first Minister for Fuel and Power in the post war Labour Government that brought the mining industry into public ownership, were both former Members of Parliament here. Jack Dormand, the M.P. from 1970 to 1987, was formerly Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party and a distinguished Parliamentarian. The seat is currently held by John Cummings, formerly a coal miner, who has through his energy and commitment helped to maintain one of the strongest Labour constituencies in the country.
Easington C.L.P. is organised into eight branches covering distinctive geographical areas of the constituency. Each local Labour Party branch holds regular monthly meetings and sends representatives to the constituency party. Easington C.L.P. meets on a monthly basis, usually on the third Friday of every month in the Durham County Council Offices in Seaside Lane Easington with political education and speakers meetings alternating with business meetings and Parliamentary report-backs every other month.
The Executive Committee, with representatives from Labour Party Branches and affiliated organisations is also the Campaign Committee of the Constituency Labour Party and meets on a monthly basis to handle the administration and smooth running of the C.L.P., organise local campaigns and responses on policy proposals.
“The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few.” (Labour Party Constitution)
